Shin splints are caused when the connective tissue that attaches your muscles to that bone pulling away or tearing. The best thing you could do is - rest, ice, and elevate the leg. And not run for a bit until you can do so comfortably. Sports tape may help while you have to be up walking around, but running will just continue to aggrivate the situation even more. You should be able to walk, so you can keep up with some exercise, but running is not a good idea at the moment. While you are on the rest part, you need to inspect your running shoes. Usually that is the major cause of the problem, running in worn out shoes or shoes that are not providing enough cushion for your foot strike. It can also be caused by the way you strike the ground as well. If you run flatfooted, the foot takes a pounding on the strike which is transmitted up the leg. Running on pavement is also hard on the legs as well. If you visit a sports shop, somebody there should be able to evaluate your feet and get the shoe most appropriate for you to run in. And if it continues to be a problem, then you need to see a sports medicine doctor or a podiatrist to have things looked at closer.
